Dr. Abbas Poorhashemi, President of the Canadian Institute for International Law Expertise (CIFILE), Canada

SHORT PROFILE

Dr. Poorhashemi is the President of the Canadian Institute for International Law Expertise (CIFILE), leveraging his extensive academic background and expertise in international law. His professional focus encompasses public international law, international criminal law, and international environmental law, reflecting his commitment to research, teaching, and practice in these domains. As the Editor-in-Chief of the CIFILE Journal of International Law (CJIL) in Canada, he contributes significantly to scholarly discourse in the field.

His academic journey includes earning a Ph.D. in international law from the University of Strasbourg, School of Law in France in 2005, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Law & Globalization at CEDIM, UQAM University, Canada, in 2013. For over a decade, he served as an assistant professor and faculty member at the University of Science and Research (IAU), where he imparted knowledge in various aspects of international law to J.D. and international LL.M. students. Dr. Poorhashemi’s teaching portfolio encompasses subjects such as international law, international criminal law, international environmental law, settlement of international disputes and arbitration.

Throughout his academic career, he has supervised, directed, and co-directed over 200 dissertations and theses on international law, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the next generation of legal scholars. Beyond academia, Dr. Poorhashemi has also practiced law as a lawyer (barrister and solicitor), expert, and legal adviser in International law, Criminal Law, and family law in many different jurisdictions.

Furthermore, Dr. Poorhashemi has been a registered Expert before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, since 2023. His role enables him to provide expertise in areas including international criminal law, international environmental law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. He is available to offer expert services to any organ of the Court and to actively participate in Court proceedings, adhering to the regulations outlined in Regulation 44 of the Court’s Regulations.
